Oxycarenidae was considered to be a subfamily of Lygaeidae until recently. Following the revision by Henry (1997), it is now treated as a distinct family.

Cotton, Hibiscus sabdariffa, and other malvaceous plants.

The bugs are dirty brown with hyaline wings and pointed head and are found on early opening or bollworm infested bolls and feed on the seeds and emit a bad odour when crushed. The lint of the boll is stained by the nymphs and adults, affecting lint and seed quality.
