The bug damages the plant by sucking up the juice from the milky grains consequently making them chaffy. Typical damage symptoms include presence of buggy odour emitting slender, greenish brown coloured elongated nymphs and adults on the earheads; earheads with chaffy grains in early developmental stage and grain spotting in the dough stage with grains showing dark brown spots with a white centre (pecky grains).
