Live character of Eucalymnatus tessellatus (Signoret)

Adult irregularly oval, bluntly acuminate in front, broadly rounded behind; sometimes almost traingular; asymmetrical in shape; flattish on the margings with median area slightly convex, margins very thin, almost transparent. Colour dark castaneous in the median area, little paler on the submargin and yellowish on the margins. Lines arising from spiracular furrows and anal cleft opaque white. Dorsal area divided into numerous irregular plates, forming an intricate work similar to that made from small pieces of coloured glass. The pattern is roughly symmetrical on the two sides of a median line. The number of separate plates varies slightly in different individuals because of merging of adjoining plates, but the main plan is constant comprising of 21 to 22 plates arising from each side of margin.
