Taxonomic position

Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Asopinae

Diagnosis
  • Distinct black "Y-shaped" marking on the pronotum
  • Robust around the pronotum and posterior abdomen, giving a subtle hourglass shape.
  • Scutellum is not U-shaped, its tip not reaching apex of abdomen.
  • Frena about one and half the length of scutellum

  • The fore-femora with a ventral, elongated spine
Female genitalia

Spermathecal duct extension reflexes dorsally at an angle of 180° before entering the spool-like spermathecal bulb. The flange of spermathecal bulb consists of anterior and posterior lips.

Biology

Eggs are laid in June-July in a compact double row containing 18-25 eggs on the upper surface of potato leaves, hatch in 5 to 8 days and sucking plant juices from potato stems. Total development from egg to adult is about 25-30 days with a fecundity of 21.8 eggs per day. Adults enter the overwintering stage in September or October (Bishop et al., 1982).

Host plants/Prey

Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) on potato, Zygogramma bicolorata on parthenium (Prasad & Pal, 2015), Chrysomela populi L. on popular plant (Tarla and Tarla, 2018).

Distribution

India, Europe (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine) and Mexico (Chandra et al., 2019).

Comments

Three colour morphs viz., red, deep yellow and black & white are noted all over the world (Chandra et al., 2019).
