Dr. Abraham Verghese, Director, ICAR-NBAIR, Bangalore stressed the importance of technologies on superior biocontrol agents, biopesticides and pheromone/semiochemicals for the suppression of pests and diseases. He also spoke about the role of industries/state govt. departments/NGOs to take the technologies forward for the benefit of farming community.

ICAR-NBAIR organized a Workshop on ‘IPR issues in Agricultural Sciences’ on 8th February 2023 at ICAR-NBAIR, Yelahanka campus. The workshop was chaired by Dr.S.N.Sushil, Director, ICAR- NBAIR. Dr. Vikram Singh, IP&TM unit of ICAR and Dr. Ashwini Siwal Director, Entrepreneurial Law Clinic, Delhi University were the resource persons. Dr. S.N. Sushil, Director, ICAR-NBAIR highlighted the importance of IP rights in agricultural research and urged the scientists to take up intellectual property-driven research in the future. Dr. Ashwini Siwal, delivered a talk on ‘Copyright issues in agricultural research’. The basic qualifications of an invention for applying patent (novelty, non-obviousness, technical advancement, economic significance), trademarks (distinctive, non-descriptive) and copyright were briefed and discussed. The issues related to patents and trademark applications, patent infringements and patentability of microbial strains were discussed.




ICAR-NBAIR and Visvesvarayya Trade Promotion Centre (VTPC), Govt. of Karnataka organized WTO an in-house Training Workshop on "Important International Agreements and Treaties for Exploitation of Biological Resources" at ICAR-NBAIR conference hall on 05th August 2015, for the staff of NBAIR.

The session was inaugurated with welcome address by Dr. T. Venkatesan Principal Scientist & Chairman, ITMU, ICAR-NBAIR. Dr. Abraham Verghese, Director, ICAR-NBAIR gave an opening remarks reg. important of workshop, regulation of import and export of insect resources and various IP related issues. The theme facilitation was presented by Smt. Prabhavathi Rao, Program coordinator, WTO & IPR relay cell, VTPC. Dr. T. Venkatesan Pr. Scientist & Chairman, ITMU. Briefed about technology transfer, Commercialization and IP issues. Dr. Farah Deeba, IP consultant for VTPC gave a session on Overview of WTO & TRIPS and treaties WRT Biodiversity/Export of organisms. The topics related to Intellectual property protection, patent trends in Insect control & Institutional IP strategy was presented by Mrs. Bindu Sharma, CEO, Origiin IP solutions, Bengaluru. This workshop thrown a light on Biological diversity act-2002, Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS), NBA Guidelines and also hall was buzzed with hot discussion on Export of organisms from India to abroad and Vice versa and seeking permission for the exchange of Biological resources from National Biodiversity Authority and State Biodiversity Board. The workshop was ended with “Vote of Thanks” by Dr. G. Sivakumar, Senior Scientist & Member secretary, ITMU, ICAR-NBAIR.
